What it actually does
Zoom Phone is the calling and texting product inside Zoom Workplace. Your team places and takes calls from the Zoom apps and desk phones, texts on SMS and MMS, gets a domestic number, and can record calls. Unlimited covers unlimited domestic calling in the US and Canada. Metered is the cheaper seat when you do not need unlimited minutes. Pro Plus and Business Plus layer Phone Unlimited onto Workplace Pro or Business, with longer meetings, more whiteboard and scheduler capacity, and stronger admin controls on Business Plus.
Virtual Agent Receptionist is the AI answering add-on. On Zoom’s AI receptionist page it books appointments, captures leads, sends SMS, transfers with context, and speaks English, Spanish, and more than 10 other languages. Standalone works with any phone system at $25 a month billed annually for 100 minutes. Bundled with Zoom Phone it starts at $0.25 a minute billed annually on top of the phone seat. Our math: three Unlimited seats at $16 come to $48 a month before tax, billed as $576 upfront for the year, before any AI minutes.
Who should buy it
Buy it
Buy it if your team already lives in Zoom for meetings and chat and wants one vendor for the phone line too. Clinics, agencies, professional services, and multi-location teams that need a menu plus optional AI answering fit well. The standalone AI receptionist also works if you keep a different phone system and only want Zoom to answer.
The catch
The reason not to buy is the bill shape. Phone seats are annual upfront at the rates on the pricing page, and AI answering is a minute meter after the included block. If you need month-to-month phone service with no annual charge, compare Ooma Office at $19.95 per user with no contract, or Google Voice from $10 a month.
If missed calls are the main problem, put it next to other AI receptionists. RingCentral prices its AI receptionist at $49 a month for 100 minutes. Nextiva sells one at $99 a month. Vonage has a phone menu on every plan but no public AI price. Zoom’s $25 standalone block is the cheapest public 100-minute AI seat in that set.
